Chipbreaker Tests

I’ve just begun these tests.

My most important result at this point has been to demonstrate to myself that a closely-set chipbreaker can reduce the amount of tear-out produced in areas of adverse grain direction, and by a significant amount. The results of this test can be found on this page.

Tests Planing Soft Pine

Chipbreaker Edge Angle 50 Degrees

Chipbreaker Edge Angle 75 Degrees

The limited results illustrated by the shavings above don’t show much difference between chipbreaker settings. I’ll need to test more species and increase the differences in chipbreaker settings to find out if this method of testing will produce useful results.
